at 125% fractional scaling, unhinted fonts render well on gnome 45 at normal viewing levels for me. But they do look nicer on gnome 46 with slight hinting + autohinter + stem darkening (this last thing being something that KDE/QT and macOS also). One thing I have noticed is that the gnome shell ui (as in, top bar, quick settings menu, notifs panel) doesn't seem to apply these new things on g46.
Anyway, when gnome 46 lands on nixOS, I'll have the stem darkening thing enabled automatically again, which is nice. I don't know if I'll re-enable hinting of fonts, maybe yes or maybe not. Very small fonts look weird with hinting, while they look rather blurry if unhinted. Oh well
