We are wrong. The scientific name for moose is Alces alces (elkes elkes). The wapiti (better name) was misnamed elk by some white colonist and it stuck.
Same for gophers, that are really ground squirrels or prairie dogs, and many others. Common names are inconsistent and cause confusion for it.
American lion = cougar = puma = mountain lion = catamount = panther...all are Felis concolor in science.
