I wanted to read Old Man and the Sea. I was so mad that at first I refused to do any work on it. The teacher sent a letter home saying I was going to fail, so I grudgingly read it. In retrospect, Gatsby is the better novel, but at the time I loathed it. I had no context for it. I was playing rock 'n roll. For my high school self it was boring people doing boring things for no discernible reasons.
