From glancing over the thread, it sounds like it could have been one of their contacts using a shady Contacts app uploading and selling all the contacts data so the solution is really having multiple segregated, more disposable numbers.
You can get cheap VoIP numbers not tied to your identity from the open source https://jmp.chat/ service. Can pay with cryptocurrency to avoid it being tied to you through a credit card. They support Monero too.
