There is the idea of using liberal ideals as cover to affect violence and oppression? Many states try to sound progressive via propaganda but act in their worst interests. Not sure it counts though?
There is also the "fall" from ideologies to republic serial villain. This is usually a narrow window. Like how a few leftist revolutions slide into reactionary authoritarian regimes once in power. For a brief time they sound leftist but act otherwise.
