with DNAT the router will rewrite the source address of the _response_ packets, but the problem is that since they're on the same link, the remote server's response goes directly to the client instead of through the router.
so either the router has to srcnat packets going TO the server, _or_, I could disconnect the server's port from the bridge, forcing all packets to go through the router.
