There are two pro-egalitarian cultural institutions that the anthropologist analyzes in her thesis:
- Protocol for speaking in public called Mòsámbò.
- Public mockery theater called Mòádjo.
What is mòádjò?
Mòádjò are public recreations of female teasing.
Women, especially older women and widows, imitate someone's recent inappropriate, unacceptable, or stupid behavior. This creates an infectious laugh, until that person leaves in a huff or swallows their pride and joins in the general fun. Laughter and mimicry are the most powerful forces of counter-control when dealing with rebellious or conceited people.
It is usually motivated by the sudden appearance of the person in question, although representations are also made that mock someone's behavior in their absence.
They also use mòádzò to teach their children how to behave. There is no point in hitting when children can learn through different means, such as laughter.
Bombjaková tells an example: your 8-year-old son keeps repeatedly bothering her sister to the point of making her cry.
Instead of scolding, criticizing or using some type of punishment, you get together with your sisters, neighbors, friends or grandmothers... and start imitating your child's behavior in front of the entire family/community. This group of women would recreate your son's behavior and exaggerate it. This theater would dissolve
