I am not sure I follow what you wrote.
I do see the necessity of free relays. I just don't see the benefit of paid ones as a "reduction of spam". If one uses free relays at the same time there would be spam anyway. But since i mainly look at posts of people I follow - I sort of prevent the spam myself.
And since the recommendation is to have just few relays. I don't see network effect of running private ones. it just does not make sense to join them.
