When I think about it my mind is still reeling that, somehow, so much of information technology has been captured by advertisements. It does make sense. There is a (near)zero cost of goods produced for software (native or web) but a lot of capital invested in the initial costs at least, and the ongoing costs for most modern software that has a server component.
The refrain that ads, “support small businesses” is under examined. What we’ve done is turn everything into the shopping network.
