Long ago we used to assume that digital services would have made our lives better.

That we wouldn't have needed any more fat photo albums, collections of VHS tapes, vinyls or drawers filled with letters to store the memories of our lives.

That assumption, like many others, has been largely thrown under the bus today. "Store your memories forever" has turned into "Either pay for an upgrade, or log in every year or so, or your emails, photos, videos and passwords will all be deleted".

That however isn't a technological failure. Digital media is still a much more efficient way of storing data compared to paper, plastic containers or drawers. That's a business model failure. That's a failure that lies on the side of companies that sold us the illusion that we could have rented space on their computers forever, and they would have taken care of them forever, no matter what.

If you want to store your memories forever, then just buy a few TBs of storage, run your own cloud, configure your own backups, and once your disks die (hopefully after at least 10 years of service) just replace them.

Even a fancy option with a miniPC and a big HD probably won't cost you more than $500, and it'll probably last at least 10 years. Even once you account for electricity bills and all, it's still cheaper than paying for a Dropbox Premium subscription over the same time window.

Nobody should have really ever believed in the fairy tale that a multi-billion dollar company would have taken care of your data forever. The safest place to store your memories, photos and emails should be within your own domestic walls.
