Upward Gaze

This yellow-bellied sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) is looking up, perhaps he sees a better spot. I think this is a young male because there are the beginnings of a red spot under his beak. You can clearly see why it is called yellow bellied.

Although a few individuals remain throughout much of the winter in the southern part of the breeding range, most head farther south, going as far south as Panama.
