A nitpick:

If you’ve got a good credit rating, you’re probably better off taking a personal loan to buy the expensive phone you lust over.

That’s only true, though, if you can purchase the phone outright for less than the financed price and the personal loan is low enough interest to be cheaper overall.

And, I can’t speak to other countries, but at least in the US, these types of financing deals are usually based on the price that it’d cost to purchase it outright at 0% interest. Checking my credit union’s rates, a personal loan starts at 9.9%, and their cheapest credit card interest is also 9.9%. So, you’d have to pay 1084.62 or less outright, to beat 1200 financed at 0%.
