Spouting and conjecture? I’m in!

When you find out you have a child on the spectrum, the whole narrative of the life you imagined with that child shifts, or changes drastically, and you are searching for answers. Around the same time, your doctor is jabbing your kid with pointy needles and there is some stress associated with that. Our brains are constantly looking for patterns, and connections, and the stressful stuff registers the strongest. So it’s natural for people to confuse correlation with causation with respect to vaccines and autism. (I think the stress aspect, and the sense that something injured your child, is the reason why we don’t blame autism on size 4 shoes 😉)

There are a lot of other factors here, to be sure. That cretin, Wakefield, using shitty science to make money. Vacuous celebrities, and their followers, jumping on an idea they barely comprehend. The modern distrust of science thanks to the nuclear age. The profit-driven motives of pharmaceutical companies. The echo chamber of the internet, where every whack-job point of view can find a crowd of supporters. And so on.
