According to a report by UN Women, women and children are the main victims of the Israel-Hamas war, with approximately 16,000 killed. The report highlights the gender inequality and the burden on women and children, with 1.9 million displaced individuals in the territory, of which close to one million are women and girls seeking shelter and safety. Prior to the Hamas attack on October 7, 67% of all civilians killed in Gaza and the West Bank were men, while less than 14% were women. The health ministry in Gaza reports that nearly 25,000 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict, with 70% of them being women and children. In Israel, around 1,200 people were killed during the October 7 attack by Hamas that sparked the war, and approximately 250 people were taken hostage, with over 100 hostages still believed to be held captive in Gaza. UN Women has called for a humanitarian cease-fire, the immediate release of all hostages, and unrestricted humanitarian assistance to address the dire situation faced by women and girls in Gaza.
