my only rusty wisdom on the Revelation stuff is that it is subject to many interpretations such as "pre/post/ amillenial". and some of those camps have a lot of sales/money/fame invested in them. The less popular a-millenial version (also prob sells fewer books) suggests that it's more metaphorical and in the words of a poet (Lowell?): "The choice goes by forever 'twixt that darkness and that light".
However interpreting everything metaphorically leaves the question of technology on the table. I'm at the point where i prefer to think of everything as technology, and I like the freedom to speculate into the magical. I am also not going to publish best selling end times stuff and start a cult.
As you say" the power in question is one of causing obedience, and those who are marked are effectively proofed against their powers of suggestion". That works already, whether or not there's something magical underlying.
