As a thought experiment, even if Mastodon/AP servers didn't add SMTP support, and assuming it'd be useful for that to work, it'd be trivial to add a rel=email to a webfinger profile, and easy enough for email clients to respect that.
Lots of possibilities! My main worry is that a fractured approach is a barrier to adoption.
