this is quite fascinating
i actually haven't read the Genesis version probably since i was little, but i read the Book of Jubilees and the Book of Jasher version and in Jubilees it was much like the Genesis version, with a little more elaboration, but Jasher was different in some key points
In Jasher, Jacob does not in fact don some goat hide things to pretend he was the more hairy Esau to his dad Isaac, nor does his mother Rebecca recommend such deception
rather, it is more clear that Isaac was deceived by Esau, and that Rebecca was acting to counter the mischief of Isaac and his stupid preference for the more saintly of the two twins
when you read the whole account of both of their lives, not only is Jacob the more likeable character, he is also the more honest and humble, and least proud of the two... and on several occasions, Esau demonstrates craft and conniving, whereas Jacob is more honest and direct
reading through the wikipedia text and remembering Jubilees and now, i probably need to read KJV Genesis again to fully grok this, but the whole thing is confusing and weird from the biblical version for me, but Jasher made it much clearer, and i think actually, the real story was that Isaac was obsessed with how of the twins Jacob popped out second even though they both were born in the same birth, and Isaac indeed had some other character flaws that can be seen in prior and later anecdotes
the interesting thing, for me, is that despite this inclarity, the christian interpretation, indeed the jewish and muslim also, is that Jacob was the good guy, and as i menion, i distinctly recall that in later incidents after this, in Jasher (which is far more detailed), it was very clear that Esau was a conniving sumbitch
it's quite interesting, though, that the ambiguity persists about the events of the lives of these people
it's definitely a sticking point for those who perceive an injustice in the "jews as superior race" story, which i think is a correct perception, and one that a huge part of the Jesus story is about remedy of
