The group decided to switch things up a little bit and we tried the alternate proficiency rules from the 5th Edition DM's Guide (p. 263), using proficiency dice instead of a straight proficiency bonus. I think we'll be sticking with it. The added variability was fun and made the difference on a few rolls.
