I stopped having anything to do with theaters long before smartphones or even cellphones existed. Before those things became potential public disturbances, people found other ways to callously create them, like bringing their ill-behaved children to ruin others' experience.
I say this as a means to highlight that this civil disrespect is not a new phenomenon and has been common throughout my entire lifetime, over six decades. It's probably been true for much longer than that.
