Following your context, I'd personally compare the Linux desktop to a house you own, as opposed to one you rent with other, proprietary OSes (which I'm assuming you're equating to the "modern house").
If the floor boards now squeak, the back door doesn't latch anymore and the toilet lever is broken, sounds like a lazy and/or inexperienced homeowner, rather than the design or quality of the house itself.
