It's interesting to watch the Twitter documentary on CNN, they describe its origins as just a bunch of people who wanted a way to update their IRL friends about what they're doing, using the medium of text messages.
Somewhere along the way Twitter became the "global town square" or whatever, but at first it was just a way to talk to small groups, more similar to Discord of today.
