Most writers have fewer and fewer readers per decade after they die, disregarding faculty and students at universities. Consequently entire centuries of literature eventually recede into oblivion. I don't think anybody even back in the 1980s read Swedish 18th century fiction for fun anymore. Wonder when the 19th century will reach this point as well.
