I will look into how these events are arriving. In the mean time, your inbox switch set to "Replies & DM" will avoid including events just because you were 'p' 'tagged and only include (and notify) of events that are direct replies to your events (or which mention you in the content).
Gossip has been rather sloppy around the rules for getting events because I've been trying to work with other clients that don't do outbox. I've erred on the side of fetching too much, rather than too little. But it is time to tighten it up a bit.
