"summary",
"The asteroid was detected by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) survey in Hawaii just hours before it burned up over the Pacific Ocean near California. The small amount of time between detection and impact meant that impact monitoring systems didn't receive tracking data about the incoming asteroid until after it struck Earth. This is the third imminent impactor detected this year, with two other asteroids detected in January and September."
