in Northern California that type of situation is called a nurse tree. There’s already something growing in the cleft! Sometimes I’d see the stump of an old growth redwood felled 150 years ago, and by that point it’s decayed enough to have new redwoods sprouting from the slowly decaying top. Forests are so cool! Thanks for sharing that beautiful birch, I’ve never lived in that kind of forest.
