Shadow Warrior 2 is fine. It's really more Borderlands than Boomer Shooter but it does it fine, with a bit of procedural generation here and there.
If you need to go back to form you can just hop to Shadow Warrior 3 after Shadow Warrior 1 (2013) but you'll be missing some story beats, so... watch the cutscenes and acquire the lore text somewhere would be my advice for that.
