I think the US has historically been a place where people take joy in suffering. This nation kidnapped Africans and enslaved them for centuries, then persecuted the Chinese, then interned Japanese, then vilified Arabs. We reached out all over the world and installed cruel dictators who crushed democracies for profit. All of this was done with full-throated support by a large portion of the citizenry.

The voice arguing for empathy and building a just space for all has always been a counterculture. But since the Civil Rights era and the (legal anyway) end of Jim Crow, we have made great strides where diversity, equity, and inclusion became more and more of a cultural norm until recently.

I see current events are a desperate attempt by a significant portion of society at a reversion to the historical norm: a small, privileged class profiting from the suffering and labor of the rest. The counterculture must fight again. The voice of empathy must once again struggle to win. https://universeodon.com/@georgetakei/114252802283810959
