Hole in the Rock road is a 40ish mile stretch of harsh desert that early mormon settlers traveled on their way to Bluff Utah. The 6 week expedition turned into a 6 month expedition and they had very little supplies. The travelers made their way through the desert anyway, and when they got to a cliff leading down to the Colorado River they had to blast a path in the rock and lead their wagons down it with ropes. They put children in buckets and lowered them down to place charges and miraculously made it through without losing a single person. It's quite an incredible story.
