This article gave me food for thought.

We've all been struggling with how to properly do account portability across the Fediverse. But what if that issue was removed by design, with subdomains used as identifiers?

Imagine a world where you own a unique subdomain as your identifier - like fabio.manganiello.tech. You can manipulate that through a CNAME/TXT DNS record to make it point to some.social/@myname.

Not only, but the same subdomain can also point to other decentralized identities (such as a Pixelfed account, an XMPP/Matrix ID, etc.) just by adding more TXT records. Or creating even more subdomain IDs - like matrix.fabio.manganiello.tech, or photos.fabio.manganiello.tech.

When you want to migrate your account to another instance, you just have to change where your DNS record points to. This won't solve the problem of migrating the old posts, but anyone who was following you through your subdomain ID will keep following you - they'll just be redirected to another instance when they click on your profile.
