MMXEngine's source code has been released to the public however as of Jan 25th. twitter.com/MMXEngine or github.com/Dragon-Developer/Mega-Man-X-Engine , with mmxe.nicepage.io if you want to try a small demo game with the engine. Since it's open maybe it would be easier to make some of the fan games, it does seem a bit odd when I see the 16bit sprites with the 32bit sprites together (Look at the vids with Magma Dragoon and you'll see.)
MMX Online Deathmatch is oddly fun for an open-arena fighter. Select an MMX stage, select character, and just go nuts. You can even play as mavericks, which is funny.
