In 2021, the phrase "Have you been to Samos?" went viral. When asked by a Dutch journalist about Greece's migration policies, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis proudly promoted the new closed camp in Samos as an "impeccable camp with impeccable conditions."
"If you go to Samos," he told the journalist, "you’ll find an impeccable camp with impeccable conditions, funded by European money, with clean facilities, playgrounds for the children to play, and no comparison to what we had in the past."

In the Samos "safe zone", 250 unaccompanied minors share just six toilets, many of which are frequently out of order, forcing them to resort to using bottles instead. They lack access to hot water, sufficient food – which is sometimes moldy – hygiene products, or enough beds.
