I, too, grew up knowing in my bones that American masculinity is deeply messed up. I was a boy who didn't fit the traditional gender role for males — sensitive, bookish, inclined to "feminine" interests — and in time, I grew up to be a gay male. It was clear to me from childhood that I did not fit in — but also that the prison of gender roles dictated by my culture was toxic.
