I find some of the ways that we (my self included) acted early in my career quite embarrassing now. There was a team leader in a company I worked for in the early 1990s, and shortly after I'd joined we were arranging to go to a restaurant and he said "I'll have to get permission from my wife, she wears the trousers in my house". One of the others present said "both literally and figuratively" and we all laughed. A little later I found out that he was the object of continual jokes, because he did wear women's clothes outside work, and his wife wore typically masculine clothes. He joined in the laughing, which at the time I took as an excuse to continue, but I can't help wondering if he was laughing as a defense.

I feel bad looking back on it that there were two people who had a strong, caring, unconventional relationship and we just treated it as a running joke.
