One thing in common between "Linux is hard" and "Mastodon UX sucks" is that there's a tension between centralized institutions making choices on your behalf and having to make those choices yourself.
That's not to trivialize --- those kinds of choices can be quite hard to make if you're not either an expert or in a community that benefits from expertise. Centralized decisions include some awful power dynamics, but also can genuinely remove some burdens.
