Maybe the nature of Mastodon is that it is its own thing and domination of the social space may not be its thing.
The way some people have been talking is that 'we' must win or go home.
The very fact that it doesn't (or can't) theoretically have to turn a profit at some unspecified point in the future is both its strength and weakness. It can't tap into that lovely lovely (/s) Venture Capitalist money.
