To be honest I thought that the "no money," "matter duplicators take care of everything," MacGuffin and Star Trek next generation was pretty half-baked.
It negated a number of Original Series plotlines of course, but more than that. Matter duplicators don't really *solve* the human condition.
We in the affluent societies already compete more on experiences than things, but in just as a base way. Name drop where you were, who you were with, or worse Facebook it.
