Even the old sony's are still great for what they are. One thing I'd recommend is to get a recorder with the plugin power mic in. I've been using it with LOM USI mics and it had greatly improoved the range of things I can do with it, while remaining very compact, unlike the XLR setups.
Having the small mics with clips on wires means you can:
- clip them on your shirt or backpack or whatever and hide the recorder to record more discretely
- lower the mics into barrels or in places that would be hard to acces just with the recorder
- clip the mics on things you record for interesting perspectives and a bit of a "contact mic pickup"
- better quality than built-in mics (which are already fine for most things)
