I agree that a lot of journalists working for mass media do indeed function as transmission belts between power and people.
I think it's a contested role, though, rather than something inherent in the craft. Just as a doctor is, in theory, supposed to make people well, a journalist is supposed to, in theory, criticise and expose power; but the current industry is making that harder.
This is why I'm wondering if there are any examples of crafts managing to push back.
