the recipe i grew up on is very simple:
brown 1lb ground beef, drain fat, add 1 chopped onion, 1 cup ketchup, 3 tbsp brown sugar, 4 tbsp lemon juice, 2 tbsp worcestershire sauce, 1/2 cup water, stir and simmer for ~30mins
i used to use this as a base, sometimes making substitutions, often making spicy additions. made a variation of it for the first time in 7+ years last night
