Math is a language and he's translating multiplication in a distorted way.
Plus is "and". Literally, the + symbol is the t from the Latin word for and: et.
They got tired of writing all of that so they just dropped the e and kept writing the t which became the +.
So "plus" is and.
What's "times"?
I taught that times translates to "groups of" or "cases of" or "stacks of" or "piles of"...it pretty much boils down to "of".
1 of 1 is 1
1 x 1 = 1
There is nothing inconsistent about that.
His issue with area and linear dimensions results from the fact that numbers without words attached to them mean very little.
Example: I have 4.
4 what? Bitcoin? Inches of dick? Rental properties generating income for you? Ex-girlfriends? Months to live? 4 what?
A number without a unit attached is pretty meaningless.
When Howard does 1 x 1 = 2 he is failing to acknowledge that the product of 1 x 1, i.e. 1, has a different unit than the two factors did to create the product.
His math hang-ups are all translation issues.
