I had the privilege to be at the temple at Caracol when the Mayan calendar cycled.
There was a presentation by a professor from the Archaeology department about calendaring systems who extolled the virtues of their system, and at one point asked if anyone knew when (to paraphrase) western calendars got leap years right.
I put my hand up and said, “September 1582”. No, they asserted, it was the 1700s.
It wasn't appropriate to "debate" in the moment, but it was disappointing.
