At this point I'm leaning towards 2, and I think my next step is going to be to begin implementing the wp_viewporter extension since it is a common enough explicit dependency for wayland applications that it's probably worth doing by itself.
If anyone does have any insights, please do let me know. I'd rather not have to resort to tracing firefox setup code.
