Heya brother! AFAICT
A user/client subscribes to relays, both to distribute & receive nostr events ('notes' are type 1 events).
When you send an event, you send to all your connected relays & hopefully they store & send them on to clients that care about your notes/events.
When you jump on your client, it requests events on a set of pubs (public user IDs you follow). This includes URLs for profiles, NIP-05 address, LNURL address, as well as any notes & encrypted messages sent to you.
Your client should verify those events (each event is cryptographically signed) and render them appropriately based on what you're doing.
I'm connecting to about 15-20 relays which seems alright (I'd say 10 minimum). 3 I've paid a nominal amount of sats to connect to.
