Supreme Court dismisses Republican suit claiming Biden officials censored social media
==========

The U.S. Supreme Court dismissed a lawsuit claiming that the Biden administration was censoring conservatives by pressuring social media sites to remove dangerous misinformation. The 6-3 decision ruled that the state attorneys in Louisiana and Missouri had no standing to bring such claims. Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel A. Alito Jr., and Neil M. Gorsuch dissented. The ruling overturned a broad court order issued by a federal judge in Louisiana and upheld by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. The lawsuit alleged that the Biden administration's actions violated the right to free speech and pointed to the White House, FBI, Office of the Surgeon General, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Supreme Court had previously put the Louisiana judge's order on hold. This term, the court has heard three major cases on social media and the 1st Amendment, all driven by complaints from conservatives about censorship. The other two cases involved laws in Florida and Texas that would impose fines or damages on social media platforms for removing conservative content. The case decided on Wednesday began with a complaint that social media platforms had blocked or downgraded posts on various topics, including COVID-19, election fraud, and the Hunter Biden laptop story. The lawsuit was brought to U.S. District Judge Terry Doughty, who issued an order prohibiting federal officials and agencies from encouraging the removal of protected speech from social media. The administration appealed to the 5th Circuit Court but lost. The Supreme Court's decision throws out the lawsuit and affirms that the state attorneys had no standing to bring the claims.
