I am not a leftist, Mao caused a huge amount of suffering to many people. His revolution was not “necessary” at all and he was merely another vicious warlord exploiting and harming the Chinese people in a time of strife and war.
His successors ended up doing much better as they meaningfully moved away from a lot of his most egregious traits and policies
