Lived for 3 years just over the mountains in Johnson City, TN. Asheville is a great liberal spot in a red state. Check out Biltmore mansion tour, the Grove Arcade mall downtown, and the amazing Battery Park Book Exchange and wine bar at the outside NW corner of the Grove.
Just north of town in Mars Hill is a hot spring spa resort where you can soak in outdoor sheltered tubs overlooking the French Broad river, & rent a room with hot spring jacuzzi baths. Good hiking nearby.
