I don’t know how long my Indigenous ancestors have been in North America, but most of my European ancestors showed up on the continent well before the notion of a United States. I am a global citizen first, a North American second, a USian third, and my primary allegiance is to the organic system of life I am a small part of.
The stars & bars my dad was awarded for his service fighting fascism in the ‘40s will stay in the old cedar chest until it can represent support for my primary allegiance.
