I second or third the notion that you should have a gun (or at least a tazer or a can of pepper spray) with you when you're out on wooded trails with tiny dogs like yours. To a coyote, bear, wolf, fox, eagle, hawk, owl, etc, you look like a server carrying around a tray or hors d'oeuvres.
If you're uncomfortable with weapons, or they aren't legal where you live, maybe consider adding another member to your pack. A big, strong, large breed male with a strong instinct to protect.
