Watching a lecture on Plains Natives, TIL that the Crow people have a creation myth that goes like this:
Coyote meets two ducks who bring up mud which becomes terra firma. Coyote makes people, plants, and animals, including bears.
Bears turn out to be a burden on the pantry and generally annoying, so Coyote condemns them to sleep through the winter to balance things out and as this lecturer just put it, "to give everyone a break."
This is just an all-around great story.
