Google, in collaboration with researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Wild Dolphin Project (WDP), has announced the launch of a new artificial intelligence model called 'DolphinGemma', aimed at analyzing and understanding the communication patterns of dolphins, marking a scientific breakthrough in interspecies communication. The model, which is based on advanced AI technologies, can decipher complex sounds produced by Atlantic spotted dolphins, such as clicks, whistles, and rapid pulses. The model has been trained on a massive dataset of audio and behavioral recordings collected by WDP since 1985, as part of the longest-running field research project under the sea, focused on studying a specific dolphin community in the Bahamas. The smart model can analyze marine sounds and predict subsequent sound sequences, enabling researchers to discover recurring patterns and understand the potential structure of dolphin language. The model can be run on Google Pixel smartphones, making it easy to use in the field and providing a practical and cost-effective solution for marine environments. The 'CHAT' system is open to researchers worldwide, and simultaneously, researchers are working on an interactive system called 'CHAT', using artificial whistles linked to preferred items of dolphins, to test the ability of these creatures to mimic the whistles to request items, paving the way for the development of a shared communication vocabulary between humans and dolphins. Google has announced plans to release 'DolphinGemma' as an open model by summer 2025, to expand its use in studying other dolphin species and marine mammals, and to support research on the intelligent communication of marine animals worldwide. This project represents a significant step towards a deeper understanding of dolphin communication and highlights how AI technologies can contribute to unraveling the mysteries of marine life and bridging the gap between humans and nature.
